About Voltaic Systems

Now and then someone comes up with a combination of technologies that really works. Voltaic Systems' clever marriage of well-engineered bags and intelligent solar charging technology is one of these combinations. Thought-out down to the tiniest detail, Voltaic bags will charge your phones, cameras, and ipods. This model, the Generator, will even charge your laptop.

All Voltaic bags use their tough, flexible solar panels to charge a built-in Lithium-Ion battery. To charge your electronic items you plug them in to the battery's voltage-regulated interface. This insures that your electronic devices can't be harmed by inappropriate voltages or overcharging. The bags come with a total of eleven adaptors that will allow you to charge most any device. If your device isn't in the list below, additional adaptors are available.

You'll find that the engineers at Voltaic are serious about making their bags extremely useful. Unlike many competing brands, the bags themselves are designed for their purpose - the bags feature clever cable-routing channels that lead to device-sized pockets, a discrete battery compartment, high-density foam padding in strategic areas, heavy-duty zippers and real Fastek click-locks. The bags are made from a tough fabric engineered by Voltaic that is woven from recycled polyethylene bottles - part of an environmental commitment that sets Voltaic apart in the industry. The award-wining fabric is extremely durable, lightweight, and repels water. The waterproof solar components are made to take a beating as well - we tried to break the solar panels by backing into walls while wearing one of the backpacks, dropping heavy objects on them, and even jumping up and down on them without inflicting any damage.

The Voltaic GENERATOR

The Voltaic Generator is the first solar bag powerful enough to charge a laptop. This solar laptop charger has high-efficiency cells and includes a battery pack custom designed to efficiently store and convert the electricity generated. It will also charge cell phones and most other hand held electronics - and quickly. Typical cell phones and iPods will fully charge in less than an hour.

The Generator's solar panel generates up to 15 watts using 20% efficient cells, enough to fully charge the included Lithium-Ion battery in about 5 hours. This is enough power to fully charge a typical laptop. Common adaptors are included for connection to laptops, phones and other handheld devices (see specifications, below). An optional reconfigured MagSafe adapter is available for MacBooks.

Compatible laptops

Not all manufacturers enable charging from external batteries and our adaptors do not fit all laptops. However, you can always use the included car charger adaptor and your laptop's car charger). Results may vary by model, but laptops by Apple, Dell, HP, IBM/Lenovo and Panasonic typically do charge. Fujitsus, Sony VAIOs, Toshibas and 17" multimedia style laptops are less likely to charge. Sign up to be notified when we can charge those laptops. Returns will be accepted for refund of any bags in new condition for up to 60 days from purchase. Battery Pack

Included with every bag is a LiIon battery with about the same capacity of a typical small laptop battery (16.8V 2400maH). Solar power is stored in the battery inside the bag, ready to run a laptop or other device when needed.

A USB plug on top of the battery connects to standard USB chargers. It also provides 5V output to the standard and optional phone adaptors which charge most popular cell phones. The voltage selector on the front of the battery allows for manual selection of voltage ranges 3.5-5.0V, 5.0-6.5V, 6.5-8.4V and 12-20V (by double clicking the button). Within the voltage range, the battery automatically adjusts to deliver the required voltage.This range satisfies the requirements for most hand held electronics and laptop computers. Note: Even though the voltage may be correct, not all manufacturers enable devices to charge from external batteries.

A DC In plug on the side of the battery connects to power from the solar panels or an included AC charger.

A charge indicator on the face of the battery shows when the battery is receiving a charge. When connected to the solar panels, this will come on when the panel is placed in direct sunlight. It shows red when charging at higher power levels and green when trickle charging (either because the battery is nearly full or in cloudy conditions).

There is also a battery level Indicator which shows the charge remaining in the battery. The battery pack clips inside the bag and can be removed for separate use.

Solar panels:

The solar panels are waterproof, scratch resistant, and UV resistant. They use a high efficiency monocrystalline cell. The three panels operate independently to generate up to 4 watts of power. This is double the power of typical solar chargers and enough to charge most portable consumer electronics (other than laptop computers - to charge a laptop you need the Generator bag). The substrate is an aluminum / plastic composite, specifically designed to be strong and lightweight. They can easily stand up to typical outdoor use including being dropped and leaned on. The panels are mounted in a flexible fabric sleeve. They articulate with the bag, which means it doesn't feel rigid or restrictive. Even if you manage to break one, which would probably take a conscious effort, they can easily be removed and replaced.
